The Bait...And Switch
A generous welcome and an amazing, generous film.
Sometimes good organizing begins with good signage and a warm welcome, and CSTI didn't disappoint. Both put me in the right spirit to enter the crossroads of organizing and culture that help make CSTI a special place. Hanging out with friends and great desserts are additional bait to make it worth braving the heat.
But it was Switch: A Community in Transition, a new film by Brooks Nelson, that really made my day. Within minutes after it started, I knew I was seeing a special piece of work. Beautifully made, politically savvy, elegantly nuanced and multi-layered, this documentary about gender transition is a definite must-see. Because Brooks and his friends and family are brave and generous enough to share both their personal and political insights, the film digs deep into how we define gender and build relationships around, through, over and under those indentifications. I hope I get a chance to talk with Brooks, and bring the film to DC. Find out more at www.boxxo.org. Then catch the film as soon as you can.
