Vote YES to Protect Basic Services and Jobs in Oregon

Voters for Oregon’s January 26th special election will receive their voter’s pamphlet as a New Year’s Day gift from the state. The last day to register is January 5th, and nonprofits have a unique role to play in making sure infrequent voters exercise their right to vote in this critical election. Oregon voters will be asked to affirm the legislature’s revenue package which, in part, will raise the $10 minimum tax for corporations for the first time since 1931.

As we reported in the last e-news, Oregon Student Association was well on their way to registering 7,500 young voters for the special election. They not only met their goal, but exceeded it! As of this week, OSA had registered 8,405 students on campuses across the state. Instead of resting, they will continue to register students right up to the January 5th deadline. Like other groups in the Voter Organizing Training and Empowerment program (VOTE), they are also gearing up for voter education work around these initiatives. OSA plans to reach nearly 15,000 students through presentations; the Rural Organizing Project is contacting over 12,000 constituents through a personalized voter's guide; and CAUSA is making sure information is available in Spanish, as well as English, to its over 5,000 constituents. Basic Rights Oregon and Partnership for Safety and Justice are also activating their own members and lending a hand to the Yes! campaign.Yes on 66 & 67

Western States Center  has endorsed the Yes! on Measures 66 and 67 campaign. We encourage you to check out the Vote Yes for Oregon website and become an endorser as well. The site offers handy holiday reminders you can send to your friends, and plenty of facts and figures to explain how this tax reform will benefit the vast majority of Oregonians at a crucial time for the neediest in the state. During tough economic periods such as these, services should be expanding, not shrinking. Help Oregon protect what’s important—education, essential services, and health care for kids!
