Across
the rift: How do we unite our members and our movement?
Divide and conquer is a strategy as old as conflict
itself, and the right has reached into a time-honored
toolbox to come up with the equipment that enables
it to keep possible opponents battling amongst themselves.
This article explores how several groups are working
with the Western States Center on a project designed
to help groups defuse potentially explosive issues. |

Hotel
workers triumph in six year strike - Las Vegas union
big winners
When Margaret Elardi bought the Frontier Hotel and
Casino, she banished the hotel workers’ union from
the premises and declared all union contracts dissolved.
Rather than accept slashed benefits and low wages,
the servers, cooks and floor workers of the Frontier
walked out and began the longest running labor strike
of the century. |

Do
contribution limits work? An analysis of campaign
finance efforts in Oregon
The struggle for a fairer way to finance elections
is a major part of the work we do here at the Western
States Center. The current system, which requires
candidates to focus overwhelmingly on fundraising,
too often leaves the elected official beholden to
his or her big money contributors. Our Money in Western
Politics Project has the best data in the country
on state level elections. In the past decade, a variety
of approaches to campaign finance reform have been
tried. The analysis excerpted below looks at the positive
and negative impacts of one type of reform effort.
We think it’s important to provide this kind of analysis
so future efforts at reform benefit from lessons learned. |

The
greening of hate: Sierra Club at the crossroads
This spring, the Sierra Club will vote on whether
or not to adopt a new position on immigration. Many
fear that this long-established and influential environmental
organization might soon be lobbying to restrict immigration.
In the process, providing a so-called "environmental"
rationale for anti-immigration and anti-immigrant
policies and fueling what some have dubbed "the
greening of hate." |

to share with us what they’ve been reading lately.
We were particularly interested in anything they found
inspirational or relevant to their work. |

From
the Director
Dan Petegorksy
While cattle and sheep defined the range wars of the
last century, hogs are the little dogies now making
their way up into the Wyoming of the 1990s.
