  Virtually all boards raise concerns at some time that their job is not clear and their work is at times difficult and confusing. Organizations are diverse, so the structure, responsibilities and work boards and staff assume to accomplish together can vary. The following documents provide an overview of how boards should effectively engage in the work of the organization and how organizations might internally structure boards and staff.

  • Board Café (Online) - Published by CompassPoint Nonprofit Services, Board Café is an electronic newsletter exclusively for members of nonprofit boards of directors. Short enough to read over a cup of coffee, Board Café offers a menu of ideas, information, opinion, news, and resources to help board members give and get the most out of board service. There are over 70 issues in their archive.
  • BoardSource (Online) - BoardSource increases the effectiveness of nonprofit organizations by strengthening boards of directors through our highly acclaimed consulting practice, publications, tools and membership program.
  • Free Complete Toolkit for Boards (Online) - Assembled by Carter McNamara, MBA, PhD of Authenticity Consulting, this free online toolkit contains documents for both nonprofit and for-profit boards in the United States and Canada.
  • Management Assistance Group, MAG (Washington, DC) - MAG provides individualized, in depth support to nonprofit groups that are grappling with organizational problems, challenged by change or growth, or striving to become stronger. MAG works exclusively with groups committed to a just, humane and sustainable society. The issues MAG helps social justice organizations to address include: purpose and priorities, organizational structure, managerial styles, financial management, fund-raising, working relationships, board development and planning.
  • Nonprofit Assistance Center, NAC (Seattle, Washington) - NAC's mission is to empower communities by building strong nonprofits and community leaders and to shape institutions and policies to achieve social justice and equity. NAC influences and guides the practice of the nonprofit sector and other institutions through technical assistance, training, leadership development and community-based research and evaluation.
  • Technical Assistance for Community Services, TACS (Portland, Oregon) - TACS has served the nonprofit community in Oregon for over 25 years providing training, consultation, information, and resources that nonprofits need to do their work better. Staff includes consultants who specialize in board development.
