  TOOLS AND RESOURCES

Over the years, Western States Center staff, trainers and consultants have developed extensive curricula and training tools. In this section, you will find documents, relevant articles and links to web resources.

BOARD DEVELOPMENT - Virtually all boards raise concerns at some time that their job is not clear and their work is difficult and confusing. Organizations are diverse, so the structure, responsibilities and work boards and staff assume to accomplish together can vary. Our board development materials provide an overview of how boards should effectively engage in the work of the organization and how organizations might internally structure boards and staff.   DISMANTLING RACISM - From 1998 to 2004, Western States Center engaged in extensive dismantling racism work as part of our Research and Action for Change and Equity (RACE) Program. Through training, strategizing and technical assistance, the Dismantling Racism Project increased the breadth and depth of racial justice work in the West by developing anti-racist leaders; providing training and support to organizations, and creating resources for use throughout the region.   ELECTORAL CAMPAIGNS - Electoral campaigns are a means to an end. They can build power—but for whom? Unless those campaigns are deeply connected to a base of constituencies and grounded in a common set of values and beliefs, they are unlikely to build towards a progressive transformation of U.S. politics. For the past decade, Western States Center has emphasized the need for community organizations to develop electoral organizing skills in order to defend our communities from attack, achieve more representative governance, and build power for marginalized peoples.   FUNDRAISING - Grassroots progressive organizations struggle to promote change with limited staff, funding and other resources. For nearly twenty years, Western States Center and its partner organizations and consultants have helped community groups unravel the mysteries of fundraising. These tools, articles and web links are designed to help build mission-driven organizations that are strong and financially secure. Go to fundraising tools and resources.

GENDER JUSTICE - Through our Family, Community and Sexuality Project, Western States Center is developing new political education tools that help organizations break down stereotypical patriarchal and racist notions of family, gender roles and sexuality. Tools include handouts, film and video, and other materials that can be utilized by organizations interested in developing pro-active gender justice strategies.   MONEY IN POLITICS - This section of our site includes essential articles, tools and web sites for groups organizing to level the playing field of electoral politics by advocating for fundamental campaign finance reform. Go to electoral campaign tools and resources.

ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Organizational development is the process through which an organization grows its internal capacity to be the most effective it can be in its mission work and to sustain itself over the long term. Since its inception, Western States Center has supported the development of progressive organizations, and we have created several tools useful in organizational development. Go to organizational development tools and resources.

ORGANIZING - Western States Center has produced many tools designed to sharpen the organizing skills and political analysis of progressive leaders and grassroots groups. Organizing tools include base building and leadership development, the nuts and bolts or recruitment, issue identification and campaign planning and strategy development. Go to organizing tools and resources.

PUBLIC RELATIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS - Tools and articles that increase organizations' power to build campaigns by focusing on the importance of media relations: telling your story in the press, building relationships with reporters, pitching media releases and advisories, press kits and online press rooms. Also covered are assessing communications capacity and infrastructure, setting goals, targeting your audience, framing and developing your message, and crafting news hooks.   TRIBAL SOVEREIGNTY - Western States Center Board member Leah Henry-Tanner and Chuck Tanner recently released a report on Tribal Sovereignty and efforts to limit sovereignty. With useful strategies for combating these efforts, this report, Living Like Neighbors, is a useful, even necessary, tool for anti-racist organizations and allies.
