  ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT - TOOLS AND RESOURCES  
     
  Organizational development is the process through which an organization grows its internal capacity to be the most effective it can be in its mission work and to sustain itself over the long term. Since its inception, Western States Center has supported the development of progressive organizations, and we have created several tools useful in organizational development.

  • Organizational Life Cycles - Non-profit organizations experience distinct stages as they develop. This tool explores the stages of an organization's life, which can repeat themselves in a cyclical process.

  • Idealist.org Tools for Nonprofits - This section of the Idealist.org web site contains some of the most useful sites on the web for individuals starting, managing and funding a nonprofit organization.
  • Leader to Leader Institute - The Leader to Leader Institute's mission is to strengthen the leadership of the social sector. Established in 1990 as the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, the Institute furthers its mission by providing social sector leaders with the essential leadership wisdom, inspiration and resources to lead for innovation and to build vibrant social sector nonprofit organizations.
  • Management Assistance Group, MAG - MAG provides individualized, in depth support to nonprofit groups that are grappling with organizational problems, challenged by change or growth, or striving to become stronger. MAG works exclusively with groups committed to a just, humane and sustainable society. The issues MAG helps social justice organizations to address include: purpose and priorities, organizational structure, managerial styles, financial management, fund-raising, working relationships, board development and planning.
  • Nonprofit Assistance Center, NAC (Seattle, Washington) - NAC's mission is to empower communities by building strong nonprofits and community leaders and to shape institutions and policies to achieve social justice and equity. NAC influences and guides the practice of the nonprofit sector and other institutions through technical assistance, training, leadership development and community-based research and evaluation.
  • Technical Assistance for Community Services, TACS (Portland, Oregon) - TACS has served the nonprofit community in Oregon for over 25 years providing training, consultation, information, and resources that nonprofits need to do their work better.
