Dr. Beirich Solidarity Statement
For decades, Dr. Heidi Beirich has built a career as a trusted expert on anti-democracy and bigoted movements - most recently as co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism. Her courageous leadership is well-known and respected in the pro-democracy field, and WSC was proud to have Dr. Beirich join other distinguished presenters at our AMP Conference last year. She has dedicated her career to sharing analysis on the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazi groups, and other white nationalist movements so that communities could see threats coming before they jeopardized decades of progress in building a more inclusive democracy. That work has made all of us safer and increased awareness of the mainstreaming of bigotry.
This month, the Department of Justice arrested Dr. Beirich in connection to its indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center, where she worked several years ago. It’s the latest escalation in a case that hundreds of civil rights, faith, and labor organizations have already called an attack on the civil rights movement and a naked attempt to weaponize the criminal justice system against political opposition. Dr. Beirich's legal team and the SPLC have commented on the arrest directly, and we know that a free and fair society should not use its government to punish people for the work of protecting communities from hate and discrimination.
This is not an isolated incident. Across the country, organizations, researchers, and civil society groups working to counter bigotry, protect voting rights and immigrant communities, prevent violence, and strengthen democratic resilience are facing coordinated efforts to discredit, defund, and silence them. These efforts range from congressional investigations to severed federal partnerships, and now criminal prosecutions. Harm against one organization or one person rarely ends there. It is a warning sign for the entire field of people who do this work, aimed at every community that depends on it.
Western States Center’s mission has never wavered: we believe in a democracy where we all thrive in a just, caring, and connected society. That vision only survives through deep solidarity, accountability to one another, and the courage to name authoritarian overreach when we see it. Dr. Beirich has spent her career in that fight. So have we. And we will not stop advocating against hate and bigotry and protecting our democracy, because this work protects us all.
