Statement on Attempted Assassination During the White House Correspondents' Dinner

All violence is wrong. Be it state violence, political violence, or vigilante violence. We must be clear: violence and intimidation are not acceptable paths to political change or the peaceful and inclusive democracy we seek to build.

Political violence threatens the safety of all Americans, and its normalization in the U.S. in recent years is a dangerous trend. Speaking out in support of the democratic process and against mis- and disinformation is critical, especially after troubling, high-profile events that bad actors and authoritarians sometimes exploit to promote conspiracies, bigotry and repression.

We all have a role to play in deescalation, supporting our civic institutions and communities, and rejecting violence.
