Western States Center Statement on the June 14 Minnesota Shooting
This morning’s targeted shooting of two Minnesota lawmakers and their families has shaken us all. We are devastated by the murder of Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, and we are holding Senator John Hoffman and his wife in our thoughts as they remain in critical condition.
Western States Center unequivocally condemns this horrific act of political violence.
This was a deliberate attack against elected officials—individuals who chose public service as a way to strengthen their communities. When violence enters our civic process, it doesn’t just endanger lives—it threatens the very legitimacy of representative government and discourages others from stepping forward to lead.
Representative Hortman and Senator Hoffman committed themselves to democratic service. Meeting that commitment with violence is not just unacceptable—it is an affront to all who believe in a just, caring, and connected society.
This tragedy does not occur in isolation. It takes place amid rising authoritarianism, nationalism, dehumanizing rhetoric, and coordinated attacks on inclusive democracy. Political violence—regardless of ideology or motive—has no place in a society that values freedom, dignity, and equity.
Today reminds us of the vigilance required to protect democracy from those who seek to undermine it through fear and force. Yet even in mourning, we are not deterred. This moment calls for resolve, not retreat; unity, not silence.
We reaffirm our commitment to defending civic life from intimidation, hate, and harm. We stand with the people of Minnesota and with every community that values democracy and public service.
Let us be clear: disagreement is a feature of democracy. Violence is not. We call on civic institutions, organizers, and pro-democracy leaders across the country to recommit to a culture of dialogue, safety, and collective accountability.
As we grieve, we organize. Western States Center will continue cultivating leaders, resourcing movements, and sharing political education that protects democracy and builds the resilient, multiracial, inclusive future we all deserve.
